These Summer Programs for STEM Students Are Still Accepting Applications For students interested in science, technology, engineering, and math fields (STEM), there are plenty of ways to gain valuable experience over the summer, whether it’s through an internship, a summer program, or an independent project. While grades and courses are the most important factors that colleges will consider when evaluating applications, they also want to see what students are doing outside of the classroom, including how they spend their summer breaks. It’s important for students to plan a productive summer where they explore an area of interset and hopefully make an impact through their involvement. For STEM students, there are a number of summer experiences to consider. For many, a STEM-focused summer program can be a valuable activity that allows them to gain hands-on experience learning on a college campus, researching, and building skills that will benefit them throughout their college education. It’s also an opportunity to demontrate a specialty – something colleges consider when evaluating applicants. Summer expeirences like internships and research opportunities are encouraged for STEM students, but it’s also possible to develop your own independent project. UC Davis Young Scholars Program (UCD-YSP) Dates: June 25 - August 5, 2017 Eligibility: Rising juniors- rising seniors Deadline: March 17, 2017 In this program, 40 students will participate in a variety of research opportunities in the fields of biological and natural sciences. Every student will participate in a six-week research project in a university lab under the guidance of university researchers. Students will be doing original research that will include â€Å"experimental design, data collection, statistical analysis, and communication of results through written and oral presentations.† Students will also participate in â€Å"morning lecture series, group study activities, educational excursions, seminars, and individual or small group instruction.† Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute- Research Experience for High School Students Dates: July 10 - August 4, 2017 Eligibility: Rising juniors- rising seniors; age 16+ Deadline: March 31, 2017 In this three-and-a-half week-long program, students have the opportunity to conduct research alongside RPI faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate students in their area of interest. This is one of the shorter research programs, but offers students the chance to participate in university research while still in high school. Johns Hopkins- Discover Hopkins Dates: Session I (June 18- July 1, 2017), Session II (July 2 - July 15, 2017), and Session III (July 16- July 29, 2017) Eligibility: 3.0/4.0 GPA, Rising sophomores-rising freshman in college Deadline: Rolling for residential after April 4, 2017 Interested in environmental health? Medicine? Psychology? In this short program at Johns Hopkins, students are able to observe top researchers in certain fields of interest, learn from experts, and participate in filed trips to relevant sites around the DC-area. University of Iowa: Secondary Student Training Program Dates: June 21 - July 28, 2017 Eligibility: Rising juniors- rising seniors Deadline: February 24, 2017 This is another program that offers the opportunity to conduct research with University of Iowa faculty in a variety of fields, including dentistry, engineering, medicine, pharmacy, and more. Michigan State University- High School Honors Science, Math and Engineering Dates: June 19 - August 6, 2017 Eligibility: Rising seniors Deadline: March 15, 2017 Students in this program will spend seven weeks living on campus and conducting research in university labs. University of Chicago Summer Session- High School Research in the Biological Sciences Program (RIBS) Dates: June 17 - July 14, 2017 Eligibility: Rising juniors-rising seniors Prerequisite: 1 year of high school biology Deadline: March 1, 2017 Interested in molecular, microbiological, or cellular biological research? This program is for you! Students will spend four weeks doing researching using biological research techniques. Students will start with a broad instruction on basic lab techniques and will move toward more focused research methods as the program progresses. Students also attend lectures, make group presentations, and present at the program’s concluding research forum.
